This book was published on occasion of the exhibition Determinations of proportion, by Franz Erhard Walther, shown at Estancia FEMSA – Casa Luis Barragán from May to September 2018.
The artist’s texts included were translated directly from the original German edition, entitled Architektur. Vernichtung des Raums (2003).
Research, support, and collaboration for the exhibition and the publication were provided by The Franz Erhard Walther Foundation, Fulda, Germany.
“In 2003 Franz Erhard Walther wrote Architecture: The Destruction of Space for a lecture delivered at the Marble Hall of the City Palace (Stadtschloss) in Fulda, Germany. In spite of its title, this paper is not an open attack on architecture, but rather a series of reconsiderations. It offers, among other things, original insights and reflections on architecture, its history and current state, its function, experience, and links to other arts. Moreover, the text conveys the artist’s own “architectural thinking” behind his practice, especially after 1962. Walther’s presentation was articulated through different categories, including space, place, architecture and art, building, image, dimension, proportion, color, memory, light, and body. The work of almost any architect could be discussed as regarding to these topics. In this paper, my intention is to address some of Walther’s ideas and relate them to the practice of the Mexican architect Luis Barragán. Through Walther’s ideas in Architecture: The Destruction of Space, it is possible to understand some latent common features and other not so evident connections found in both his work and Barragán’s.”
Fragment of “The Destruction of Architectural Design The body and haptic experience in Franz Erhard Walther’s and Luis Barragán’s work”, text by Daniel Garza Usabiaga included in Architecture. The Destruction of Space (Estancia FEMSA -Casa Luis Barragán, Mexico, 2018)
